Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years (1981)

Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years (1981)
Member Rating:
As indicated by its title, this British miniseries concentrated on the years between the two world wars, when the eminent Winston Churchill (Robert Hardy) was politically out of favor in his own country. Acutely aware of the danger looming in a newly re-armed Germany, Churchill vainly tried to warn his fellow Britishers that Hitler was not a man to be trusted. It was only after the benighted PM Neville Chamberlain (Eric Porter) saw the promise of "Peace in Our Time" blow up in his face that Churchill was ensconced in his proper position as leader of his nation. First telecast in the U.K. in 1981, Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years aired in the U.S. two years later. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The series focused on the inner and outer struggles of Winston Churchill. Although the dialog employed typical British understatement, it provided plenty of gripping tension and suspense. The period settings took you back to the upper-crust Britons of the 1930's. You got to know the personalities involved, the dishonesty and treachery, and some of the character flaws of Churchill, which made him a failure in peacetime.

Robert Hardy is superb as Winston! He was a visionary who saw the evils of Hitler and was ignored or villanized by the conservative party for 10 years. Both this and Disk 1 are great background info on World War II and how the the politically correct of the day did not respect WC. Could not stop watching it!

This film is a superb characterization of Winston Churchill during the period prior to the second world war..every nuance of his life and his family and associates in and out of the parliament are covered in exquisite detail..I have seen it at least a dozen times over the years and never tire of Robert Hardy's magnificent performance as well as Sian Phillips as Mrs. Churchill; I can remember as a child the radio announcement of the 1938 Munich debacle..of course many people in this country were taken by Hitler's ruse over Neville Chamberlain; I also had the distinction of seeing Mr. Churchill outside of Middlesex Hospital in London in 1961 while I was teaching there..it was a proud moment to see the great man in a wheelchair alongside with Clemmie. One of the finest series ever produced..5 Stars!
