A mournful look at the last days of opera diva Maria Callas, director Franco Zeffirelli's biographical drama attempts to explore the irresistible allure of a comeback for a fallen star who hungers for the success of her past. Weathered from the excess of the previous decade and with her best performances long behind her, Callas (Fanny Ardant) withdraws to her Paris apartment to live her final days in seclusion. Despite being ravaged by a throat disease and being stuck in an extended period of mourning following the death of her true love, Callas' manager Larry Kelly (Jeremy Irons) nevertheless suggests that the former reigning queen of opera attempt a spectacular comeback. Though she is physically unable to perform the pieces the way that she once did, the suggestion to lip-sync to recordings of her previous performances offers a tentative chance for latter day fame. Despite her belief that lip-syncing her performance would be dishonest to her fans, the prospect of performing Carmen, an opera that she once recorded but never performed on stage, offers Callas one last shot at reliving her former glory. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

You already know the plot so I will tell you that Ardant's performance as Callas is superb. She was not a caricature but a character. She breathed life into a star who seems distant and untouchable. Ardant gives us a touch of her frail and very human side. Alternately, Jeremy Irons is excellent as the protagonist trying to revive Callas and her career. The production values are wonderful as are the oppurtunities to imagine what might have been...

Zeffirelli's work is always a good experience. He imagines in great, specific detail and then renders it in the mis en scene. One feels as if one is watching a documentary, no matter what the subject. It's absolutely plausible and believable. This film is not an exception. It's a fantasy about a real historic person. I found myself completely caught up in the central dilemma of the plot: whether it is better to give the world a beautiful illusion, or to settle for nothing less than absolute authenticity. Ardant and Irons are terrific. It's a joyful movie despite the sadness and yearning that pervade the story.

Very good acting from Ardant and Irons, but the supporting cast was not all there. The direction seems stilted and forced in some segments. Otherwise a very moving script, clearly produced from an intimate knowledge of the subject.
