Maîtresse (1976)

Maîtresse (1976)
Member Rating:
For a change, the character portrayed by Gérard Depardieu in Maîtresse is relatively normal; it is the world around him which has gone slightly mad. Looking for a measure of affection and companionship, Olivier (Depardieu) crosses the path of the lovely Ariane (Bulle Ogier). She happens to be a professional dominatrix-and from the evidence we're presented, she's one of the most accomplished of her ilk. How this mismatched (to put it mildly) relationship can possibly work is the core of Maîtresse. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Mattresses is the definitive dominatrix movie, A stellar performance by Gerard Depardieu in the leading role as a petty burglar breaking into the wrong apartment where he meets a woman that will change his life. The movie has many levels and is more than the obvious slice of a true dominatrix life. Themes of sexuality and power are explored in depth. This movie will stay with you for a long time and is worth repeat watching. And you don't have to be part of the leather crowd to enjoy this flix , though it may allow you to go beyond the s&m action and enjoy the layers to be found here.

Maitresse is far too focused on s&m and not focused enough on telling an interesting story. We finally gave up watching it when it turned brutal. I do not recommend this movie.

Made in 1975, this film is cutting edge even today. From the opening shot of the descending mechanical staircase to the vanishing rubber-gloved arms of the dominatrix as she descends into the dungeon--and this just on the splash screen where you click "play," "subtitles," etc.--you know you are in for a bold cinematic treat. The young Depardieu has never been sexier and virile than in this film, and it's easy to see why he became such a big star in the ensuing years. (The fact that he ended up looking like Brando, i.e., a whale, is another story but what can one expect from either man, both of whom had huge appetites for life?). This strong film may not be for everyone but it's clearly a masterpiece, and memorable. One of the greats.
