Another Heaven, a Japanese supernatural crime drama directed by Joji Iida (director of Rasen, the first Ringu sequel), begins with cops on the scene of a bizarre homicide. A young man has been killed, his neck snapped, and there is a stew cooking on the stove. When a young detective, Manabu (Yosuke Eguchi), arrives on the scene, he quickly discovers that the corpse's brain is missing, and before long, the horrified policemen realize where the brain is. Before long, more brainless victims turn up, with their brains cooking nearby, and it becomes clear to Manabu and his grizzled older colleague (Yoshio Harada) that they have a culinary-inclined serial killer on their hands. Meanwhile, Manabu is seduced by a friendly ex-con, Asako (Kunihiko Ida), but he's interested in the more refined Dr. Sasamoto (Mikako Ichikawa), who works in the police lab. The killer, a beautiful coed, goes on one last spree, and just when the police are about to track her down, she somehow switches bodies with a hapless young man. He taunts Manabu, leaving his mangled victims with dedications scrawled in blood. As Manabu struggles to unravel the mystery, he begins to suspect that one of the women he's involved with may be possessed by the killer. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Since Fangoria had something to do with this film, it probably means expectations should be set low. The acting was reminiscent of films from the 60's. On the disk, there's a text based article that includes the director criticizing the actress playing Asako. Ironically, her acting provided more range than anyone else's in the film. The special effects and makeup were amateurish at best. The picture quality was too dark at times making it difficult to see the crime scenes. The subtitles had problems including a poor translation of the script (unless the script was that bad), no subtitles for some of the spoken dialogue as well as grammatical and spelling errors. Additionally, the subtitles are burned into the film, so they can't be removed or adjusted. There are no language or subtitle options. The audio is in stereo. As for extras, there is a trailer for the movie, five trailers for movies you'd definitely want to avoid and a text based article regarding the movie. Not recommended.

Being a Japanese horror fan, I thought this would certainly be a movie I would enjoy. I was greatly disappointed. The movie begins with an excellent opening scene - there is comedy mixed with horror and an original M.O. for the first murder (spoiled, by the way, by the "plot summary" on this site). However, about 40 minutes into this very long movie, it begins to lose momentum. I suppose it was the acting that made me care enough about the characters to tough out the painfully lame script and watch the rest of this 2 hour, 12 minute movie. The essential plot elements could have been adequately presented in 60 minutes. About half-way through the movie all I could think of was "WHEN is this movie going to END?" BTW, if you already read the plot summary on this site, you already know all of the too-few interesting aspects of the plot, including the origin of the murderer, which *could* have been a "pay off" for sticking out the movie.
