Director Elia Suleiman uses a mixture of romantic comedy and quirky humor to shed light on the problems of Palestinians in Yadon Ilaheyya (Divine Intervention). E.S. This film is a dark comedy providing a caricature of the difficulties of life in the Palestinian territories. Admittedly, it is not for everyone. There is no fluid narrative for the viewer to follow but, instead, each scene is a portrait of another aspect of life such as being separated from a lover by an Israeli checkpoint, encountering a settler on the street or playing off of stereotypes and absurdities inherent in certain assumptions that guide policy in a sort of violent but humorous wish-fulfillment. The camera work is stunning and the direction grand. Suleiman avoids using seasoned actors and, as such, coaxes a certain authenticity out of his cast without them coming across as raw or amateurish. If you are a fan of film this is a good title to watch but if you are looking for a standard romance or action story line you might want to look elsewhere.

Good, but it might take a couple watchings and re-windings before you get it. The scene with the hands is amazing.

Actor/Director Elia Suleiman's darkly comedic depiction of the absurdities and injustices experienced by the Palestinian people will not get thumbs up from everyone. There is a non-linearity to some of the sequencing in the film that may leave some viewers trying to "connect the dots." With just a little patience, however, the attentive viewer comes to comprehend the surreal absurdity Suleiman conveys as an aspect of life that goes along with the tragedy and horrors endured by Palestinians living under occupation. One valuable addition to the DVD is the interview with the Director in which he describes his own marvelous creative process. The acting, camera work and editing are wonderful. With apologies to anyone who finds the film insufficiently sensitive, either to Israelis or to Palestinians, and no apologies to those for whom the film moves too slowly, I give this work all of the stars (five) and thumbs up (2) available.
