Writer/director Lisa Cholodenko follows up her much-acclaimed 1997 debut High Art with this examination of a young couple seduced into a hedonistic, left-coast lifestyle. Taking its title from its central locale, Laurel Canyon focuses on a pair of upper-middle class lovebirds from the East Coast who relocate to Los Angeles. Freshly minted from Harvard, Sam (Christian Bale) and Alex (Kate Beckinsale) are eager to continue their medical studies out West, but they need some lodging while they hunt for a home. Enter Jane (Frances McDormand), Sam's estranged, Age-of-Aquarius mom, who's more than willing to put the couple up in her lavish digs. Jane is a successful record producer whose latest charge -- both in the studio and in her bedroom -- is Ian (Alessandro Nivola), a brazen, libidinous twentysomething Brit-rocker. As Sam and Alex settle in at Jane's, they gradually lose their straight-and-narrow approach to life and begin to experiment. Alex takes to Ian and Jane, while Sam is wooed by co-worker Sara (Natascha McElhone). Laurel Canyon features a score by Shudder to Think's Craig Wedren; the music for Ian's band was provided by Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous and indie-rockers Folk Implosion. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

Showcasing morally suspect characters "sort of" give in to their sexual weakness, this movie has the effect of not making me care for any of the characters. Frances McDormand is a great actress, but in this roll she just doesn't blossom at all. I know she's supposed to be a "rode hard, put away wet" music producer, but can somebody say, "Makeup!?" Bale plays a schleppy, (extremely) uptight medical resident who's not very sympathetic (nor emphathetic). The transformation of Beckinsale's character from prude to bi-sexual groupie is unbelievable to say the least. A little more time for this cross-over would have been in order. Overall, the movie is so-so...

A near plotless movie, catch a week in the life of blaah. It's a chick flick, 2 love stories, turned love triangle twice. The acting was fine. But as a guy, I couldn't even be nive enough to my wife and stick it out the whole 2ish hours, I left after an hour (we rented this).

The characters of Laurel Canyon are very passionate people. Yet, with all their passions, this is a film about missed connections: lovers always one beat behind one another; a mother and son never getting it together at the same time. Filmed beautifully, with actors who give it their all (wow, Frances McDormand, you're brilliant), this is still just a film about coldness that not even the pastels of California can warm. I recommend it, but be prepared for a non-linear and often frustrating experience. Talent is a lot but it's not everything.
