A woman's grief and her mother's madness lead to strange and unforeseen consequences in this offbeat drama based on a novel by Ruth Rendell. Betty Fisher (Sandrine Kiberlain) is a promising young writer who has a four-year-old son, Joseph (Arthur Setbon). Betty's mother, Margot (Nicole Garcia), comes to visit her from Spain. Betty's relationship with Margot is difficult at best; Margot is emotionally unstable, and once attacked her daughter with a pair of scissors when she was a child. While spending time with Margot, Betty loses track of Joseph for a while, and the boy is severely injured when he falls out of a window. While Joseph is rushed to the hospital, he never regains consciousness and dies later that day. Betty is understandably distraught, and as she sinks deep in sorrow, Margot snatches Jose (Alexis Chatrian), a boy the same age as Joseph who is the son of Carole (Mathilde Seigner), a waitress with a serious drug habit who often delegates care of her child to her new boyfriend, Francois (Luck Mervil). Margot claims that Jose deserves a better parent than Carole, and she gives him to Betty to care for; while Betty is fully aware of the impropriety of Margot's action, the loss of Joseph has left such a void in her life that she reluctantly accepts the child as a way of dealing with her sadness. Betty Fisher et Autres Histoires was directed by one-time Francois Truffaut associate Claude Miller. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

[SPOILER ALERT: Do not read the "Movie Details" above, or the plot summaries in other reviews, which will destroy the "surprises" in the story.] Following what seemed like an endless series of unwatchable rentals, this "mystery" film, based on a Ruth Rendell novel, comes as a welcome relief. Cast logic aside (some of the plot developments are improbably convenient), and you can appreciate the provocative subject matter, the fine acting from Kiberlain and Garcia, and the relaxed pacing of director Miller (whose later film, "A Secret," can also be recommended). [In French, with subtitles.]

the mother is a psycho and wacked in the head to take the child of another and give it to the distraught and vulnerable time of her daughter during her grief and confused void so that she could make up for troubled thoughts. The child was kidnapped and the real mother was going mad looking for him, I think it portrays the grief of one mother to bring on additional grief of another. What is the message of the movie and why is the author only outraging another mother in the movie. It really tears you up in side watching this. Hang on to the edges of your seat and bite your lip while your at it. This is another one that can really get you wondering about people's nature and what they are capable of. Makes you if your a parent look around you and make sure that kid of yours is still next to you in public places if you know what I mean.

I first saw this movie on the BBC in England. Before i could make up my mind not to watch it i was fully involved. Excellent and ironic twists and turns. Days of Our Lives wishes they could be this movie.
