At first, I wasn't sure if I could go along with this one. The only other Chabrol I've seen is Nada (which isn't very good). This movie, however, builds to a fevered psychodelic pitch. The movie starts with what I assume was shocking violence in 1970 but seems partially dated and a little unrealistic to me. I forgave the film this one thing once I got about half way through it. I can now see why Chabrol is linked to Hitchc0ck. Chabrol weaves social commentary, disturbing sexual imagery, and "the wrong man" bit into what becomes a fulfilling movie. This is probably not the best Chabrol out there, though I wouldn't know since I haven't seen much yet. I'm hoping Les Biches and Le Boucher will show me why Chabrol is a master. Overall I recommend this as a good (not great) film.

Stephane Audran is good but no other likeable characters and an unconvincing plot make this well below average.
