i saw this movie in the theater the day it came out back in the early 80s. its a little cheesy by today's standards, but still its one of the greatest hip hop movies of all time. definitely a history lesson for all the young'ins, who dont know anything about *real* hip hop (but think they do).

Unless you're a hip hop head and were listening to rap in the early to mid-80s, you probably won't appreciate this film. It was loosely based on the formation of Def Jam Records and RUSH Entertainment (and if you don't know what those are, you most likely won't understand the historical importance of the film). Blair Underwood plays the Russell Simmons analogue and Rick Rubin plays his own. Run-DMC, The Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, and Sheila E all play important roles as themselves. The Beastie Boys and New Edition have cameo appearances. Not the best written or best acted film, it was still interesting for those of us who were into the scene at the time. I enjoyed it mainly for the history it showed of THE most important rap label as well as for the various old school (they weren't old school when the film was made in 1985, though) rap performances.

totally agree! i remind me of the old-school days in the south bronk, the shell top addidas with the brothers battling and freestyling on the corner. today's young blood could learn a thing or two from these pioners
