Written by animation master Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his protégé Yoshifumi Kondo, this film is a simple tale about a young girl who falls in love and learns to believe in herself. Suzuku Tsukishima is nearing the end of her final year of junior high. An avid bookworm, she devours books while quietly dreaming about becoming a writer. Though vivacious and outgoing with her best friend, she withdraws into herself when in the presence of her bossy older sister; her studious father, who is busy researching local history; and her mother, who is absorbed in the college courses she's taking. Then one day, she meets Seiji, a lad who has the ability to both irritate and charm her, often at the same time. He also harbors an unusual ambition: to build violins in Cremona, Italy. Around the same time, she meets a kindly old man who owns an antique shop, whom she later learns is Seiji's grandfather. One item in the store particularly catches her eye -- a strange statue of a cat with glittering eyes. Inspired by Seiji's utter determination to realize his own dream, she writes a story about the feline-shaped sculpture coming to life. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

It was relaxing to watch, I loved the animation, plot, and music. The two problems I had with it were the english voice overs (sometimes it seems like things got lost in translation, and the protagonist's voice sounds pretty bad in my opinion) and the weird junior high scenes. I thought the junior high couple acted a bit too grown up for their age in some parts, while at the same time acting very kiddish and silly in others. But maybe that's part of the difference b/w American and Japanese culture, I have no idea. Regardless, even after seeing a slew of Miyazaki's other films, I still think this one is quite enjoyable and worth the time to watch.

I absolutely loved this movie. I was looking for those magical, mystical creatures that you can usually find in Miyazaki's work, but to my pleasant surprise, this one didn't contain any of those. It is a truly simple, heartfelt coming of age (or feelings really) story of two people who has tremendous love and talent. I was inspired by their ambition to follow their passions even though they were so young in body and mind. They give anyone inspiration to follow their dreams and incorporate those dreams into the day-to-day existance of life. It made my weekend to watch this and I plan on getting a copy for myself so I can continue to watch this beautiful story time and time again.

A young friend of mine recommended this to me - and it was indeed a sweet story with the wonderful Miyazaki Studio animation.
