I was so taken in by Burt Lancaster's role, that I started to feel sorry for Burt, thinking that he was a down and out actor - then I realized - HE'S ACTING! (If it wasn't for the Henry Fonda sympathy vote, he should have won Best Actor in 1981.) A terrific flick portraying the hopes/dreams of the down and out in society - even Atlantic City looked like a grungy town. Taut story, masterful setting, good cinnamatography and wonderful acting/adventure. You had to be on the edge of your seat, rooting for these losers. This movie passes the test of time - as good today as in the '80's.

Even late in life Burt Lancaster shines in this role.

A quietly sparkling gem of a movie, featuring an off-kilter July/December love story set in the decrepit days just before Atlantic City's revival. Burt and SS are both terrific and brew up some interesting chemistry - who'd a thunk it?
