At Midnight, I'll Take Your Soul (1963)
Member Rating:
Brazilian horror auteur Jose Mojica Marins both directs and stars in this hallucinogenic chiller (aka A Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma), playing a sadistic village undertaker named "Coffin Joe" who strikes fear into the hearts of pious townspeople through rape, mutilation and murder. Obsessed with continuing his bloodline by siring a child with his "ideal" woman, Joe first takes steps to eliminate his wife (with the help of a venomous tarantula), then sets his lecherous sights on his friend's gypsy fiancee. The horrid crimes that follow bring down the wrath of a gypsy curse, which comes to pass during a village celebration on November 2 -- the Day of the Dead. This is widely regarded to be the first horror film produced in Brazil. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Thought to be the first horror film to be produced in Brazil , this film became a cultural phenomena in the South American country in the mid 60's due to it's "frighteningly sacreligious antihero" main character Coffin Joe. On an obviously microscopic budget horror auteuer Jose Mojica Marins wrote, directed and starred in the lead role in this black and white, psychedelic grindhouse morality tale. It's the age old story of psychotic boy meets gypsy girl, does ANTHING to posess said girl and through her inevitable Gypsy curse gets his kharmic "come uppance". While not your standard horror classic I have to recommend at least a single viewing of this film for any horror fan . It is oddly creepy and disturbing in a "can you believe they let him get away with that - back then?" kinda way. Coffin Joe even went on to star in (count em) - 4 sequels! Worth viewing - just to see the precursor to such horror icons as Freddy Krueger and Jason Vorhees..

Bad acting and cheezy camera shots made this a total waste of time to watch. This is the first movie I have ever actually fast forwarded through the entire thing, waiting for something worthwhile to see!
