Set amidst the controversy of the handover of the Panama Canal from America to Panama in late 1999, this espionage thriller follows seductive British spy Andrew Osnard (Pierce Brosnan), who has found himself recently banished to Panama. When Osnard stumbles into a tailor shop, he meets Harry Pendel (Geoffrey Rush), a garrulous sort with an unmatched penchant for "fluence" -- that is, fabricating wild tales with real-life details. Osnard threatens to expose his shady past, until Pendel agrees to provide him with information about the political situation in Panama. Pendel's wife Louisa (Jamie Lee Curtis) tries to remain unscathed by her husband's constant follies, which escalate and put him in the midst of international discord, while also threatening the shaky relationship between himself and Osnard, who cannot escape each other's grasp. Based on John le Carré's popular 1996 novel, the film also features Catherine McCormack, David Hayman, and young Daniel Radcliffe, who completed this film before his starring role in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, released later in the year. ~ Jason Clark, Rovi

... just don't. There are no good reasons to see this movie and plenty of good reasons not to. For starters, you won't waste that much of your precious time on earth. For seconds, you may never see Geoffrey Rush or any of the other actors in the same light again. Of all the acting Geoffrey's was the only reason to give this film a star at all and I should think that Pierce wished he'd never set out on a mission that seems to be designed to cast him in a non-Bond character but instead puts him up as wooden, shallow and utterly devoid of talent. In fact, so bad as so many of the performances in this movie that one can't help but drift to the notion that it might have been appaulingly directed. It is, I suppose, vaguely possible that the film was intended to have a slap-stick element but the over done makeup and ghostly apparitions jar viciously with the rambling script and discontinuous screen play.

There's an added layer of irony to watching this now because this is the same kind of snow job that got the US into Iraq. Sometimes the film leans a little too far into parody, like Dylan Baker's general who seemed straight off the set of a "Dr. Strangelove" remake, but it's still very entertaining.

The above reviews are mostly bad and I do not agree. I just got back from Panama and I enjoyed the lush scenic shots of Panama and on-location shots of Panama City and the Panama Canal. Pierce Brosnan plays a bad guy which is nice to see compared to his usual image. The plot is interesting and relevant to the conduct of foreign policy even today. The characters are interesting. It is just the right length, slightly under two hours. It gives you plenty of action and something to think about after.
