Just Before Dawn (1980)
Member Rating:
Director Jeff Lieberman followed his horror-science fiction film Blue Sunshine with this effort, which rehashes many of the themes explored in Wes Craven's seminal horror work The Hills Have Eyes. The plot concerns a teenage land owner who heads for the mountains of Oregon with a deed to his new property and an RV full of young friends only to discover (to their extreme peril) that words on paper mean less than nothing up there... or, in the words of horticulture-loving park ranger George Kennedy, "Those mountains can't read, son." By nightfall, the youths learn the gravity of this warning, as they are set upon by a hulking Mongoloid in a knit cap and pilot's glasses who seems capable of being in two places at once. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

When I first starting watching this flick I thought to myself "Great! another 80's horror treat to add to my favorites list!" Well, while it keeps you intrigued throughout, that punch we all love from this era never really builds steam. I enjoyed watching it, as it does have that 80's glimmer, but it could have been so much better. If Wrong Turn was an indirect remake to this movie, they succeeded very respectively - and I'm a tough judge of remakes.

Although I can give the film credit for being the one that others would borrow from (most notably Hell Night & Wrong Turn) I can't say much else positive about it. Slashers might be silly, stupid, predictable or down-right preposterous but they should NEVER be boring and near-bloodless; this film, however, is both. After the first death, which is quite painfully gruesome, it's all downhill. The blood is sparse, the scares are few, the "plot" thin. Unless you are a die-hard slasher completist don't bother with this one.

Blood: 1/2 Cheese Factor: 5 Acting: 2 Overall: 3 Ok so basically this moive is a heavely watered down mix of 'Deliverence' and 'Wrong Turn' only its 80's style. It was okay I kinda was expecting more so I was a little let down but I must say it at least kept my attention, not as easy as you may think. Check this one out if theres nothing else, and ladies watch out for those make-up stealing racoons!
