Black Adder Back and Forth (1999)

Black Adder Back and Forth (1999)
Member Rating:
Rowan Atkinson returns to the role of royal scoundrel Edmund Blackadder in this hilariously skewered romp through British history. On the eve of the New Millennium, the latest incarnations of Blackadder and his eternal flunkey Baldrick step into a time machine, purportedly based on a design by Leonardo da Vinci. On a dare, the boys agree to check out a few historical high points -- only to become totally lost in time and space, bouncing back and forth (hence the title) from the Jurassic Period, to the era of Robin Hood, to the reign of Queen Elizabeth, back again to 1999, and back again "forward into the past." Several of the regular performers from the previous Black Adder TV series are once again in attendance, including stars Atkinson and Tony Robinson, Miranda Richardson, Hugh Laurie, and Rik Mayall. Produced for exhibition at England's Millennium Dome on January 1, 2000, Black Adder V: Back and Forth was previewed on December 6, 1999, and subsequently telecast on the Sky TV satellite service. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Don't get me wrong. It's still pretty funny. But *Back and Forth* is just that, back and forth. The plot is haphazard, and the jokes are too contrived. The *Blackadder* series is one of the most brilliant historical satires to come out of television, but this feature-length reminiscence is mostly lame. It would perhaps be enjoyable if I weren't already a *Blackadder* fan, but the greatness of its predecessors makes this episode disappointing. Notable exception: Colin Firth as a young Shakespeare, alternately playwright and inventor of the ball-point pen.

This movie is typical Rowan Atkinson and is just plain funny. If you enjoy British humor, you will enjoy this movie....

If you've heard of Blackadder and you have been thinking of checking it out - this is not the episode for you. I first recommend that you get yourself hooked on Rowan Atkinson's delightfuly dry humor by watching a few earlier episodes. Then, when you have joined the ranks of die hard Blackadder fans and find yourself quoting lines like "I just had the scrummiest dream about ponies!" it is time to delve into this treat for the initiated.
