Lost Gods was distributed as a "lecture film," a documentary which was screened in conjunction with the presence of a live narrator. Most lecture films of the early 1930s were shot silent, but this production was fitted out with a soundtrack, albeit a rather crude one. The film's "auteur" was Count Byron Kuhn De Podrock, who while leading an African expedition came across several nearly-forgotten tribes and their equally obscure religious artifacts and ancient temples. Reviewers complained that there was "nothing unusual" about the film, indicating that there was a glut of these documentaries on the market.
