Jay (Mark Rylance) is a cold, emotionally distant man who abandoned his wife and children several years ago andnow works in a nightclub. Jay enters into an affair with a married woman, an amateur actress named Claire (Kerry Fox), in which their emotional needs barely enter the picture; they meet once a week and have sex, talking as little as possible and parting ways once they're done. One week, Jay follows Claire after their weekly encounter and sees her meeting her husband Andy (Timothy Spall), a cheerful and good-natured cab driver. Jay becomes curious about Andy and strikes up an acquaintance with him; as they become friendly, Jay begins sharing with Andy the details of his affair with a married woman, without mentioning his lover's name. This was a rather odd story about a self-proclaimed drifter who abandons his family and becomes obscessed with the married woman with whom he is having an affair. Her husband is neurotic and somewhat disparaging and tolerates her infidelity. It was hard to like any of the characters as they were all tortured and selfish souls. CAUTION: It appears that the foreign film-makers have far less prudery than American film-makers, as the sex depicted in this film shows male and female full frontal nudity and most of the film involves filming the main characters having sex, barely short of what would be considered full pornography. I would say that the acting of the film was overall better than the portrayal of sexuality, but if it was rated, probably would deserve an X.

Sad, selfish characters, indulging themselves. Betraying spouise and kids, delusions of a housewife spending a bit of her time acting, and the rest of it keeping secrets from hubby, kids and lover; a failed musician, stuck in a nowhere job as a bar manager catering to lonely drunks, and abusing employees who need the job. Or a cuckolded cabbie, content to drink and shoot snooker in the pub, while pretending that his wife's non-paying pursuit of acting is in any way worthwhile. Icky. There is not a single person in this movie that I would want in my life. Movies like this make me wonder, where are people that act kindly and show a bit of personal character while trying to improve their lives, and the lives of others? Whatever, I didn't find it in this movie, and you won't either.

This movie did seem a bit odd, but overall I didn't think it was horrible. The characters each carried their roles out perfectly. As far as the "love scenes", it wasn't as bad as people here are saying - unless I saw a different version of the film; there is lots of nudity but the scenes are obviously simulated.
