Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a bright and charming high-school student who also has a dark and willfully eccentric side; he does little to mask his contempt for many of his peers and enjoys challenging the authority of the adults around him. Donnie is also visited on occasion by Frank, a monstrous six-foot rabbit that only Donnie can see who often urges him to perform dangerous and destructive pranks. Late one night, Frank leads Donnie out of his home to inform him that the world will come to an end in less than a month; moments later, the engine of a jet aircraft comes crashing through the ceiling of Donnie's room, making him think there might be something to Frank's prophesies after all. The rest of Donnie's world is only marginally less bizarre, as he finds himself dealing with his confused parents (Mary McDonnell and Holmes Osborne), his college-age sister (Maggie Gyllenhaal), his perplexed analyst (Katherine Ross), a rebellious English teacher (Drew Barrymore), a sleazy self-help expert (Patrick Swayze), and the new girl at school who is attracted by Donnie's quirks (Jena Malone). Donnie Darko was the first feature film from writer and director Richard Kelly; Drew Barrymore, who plays teacher Karen Pomeroy, also lent her support to the project as executive producer. A director's cut played in select theaters on a limited basis in the summer of 2004, featuring original music cues and trimmed scenes originally in Kelly's first cut of the film. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I wrote a 10 page paper for this film for an English literature-Film class centered around fear and culture. I've seen it about 30 times. It's a movie you might need to watch a couple of times for it to come full circle. It plants little clues here in there for an dramatic ending, toying with time and space. There are many focal points in this movie--hypocrisy in community, censorship, etc, and then there are supernatural themes such as self-sacrifice, time travel, and predestination. Donnie gets various visitations from a dream-like character named Frank. You are wondering, is Donnie crazy and going to shoot up his school, or is Frank an omen from a higher power trying to warn Donnie. You're not really sure and that is the allure of the plot. Donnie learns how to manipulate his world and ultimately make a final descision about his fate and the fate of the communit.

Very interesting movie. More to it than appears on the surface. You may be annoyed by people who say "Is that the movie about the crazy guy?" when you ask them if they have seen it. My daughter has watched it "about a million times," and I can see why. It is absorbing and thought provoking. And Jake Gyllengaal is so fun to watch...

Very strange, but intriguing movie. If you're just looking for a happy, mindless movie, this is NOT the one you want to rent. But, if you want to think a good bit, and be confused sometimes by a rather bizarre, complicated story, and enjoy that type of journey, go for it. I think I will rent it again in a few months to see how much more of it I understand the second time around. If you're not too bright, or just don't like to think, skip it, you'll probably hate it. But, just so you know, that will be your own fault. IMHO, if anyone trashes it, it just proves they are not mentally up to the task of getting stuff that's even a little bit complicated. Flawed, for sure, but worth a rent if you've got a decent IQ and aren't afraid to be challenged to use it.
