Cuando los Hijos Se Van (1943)

Cuando los Hijos Se Van (1943)
Member Rating:
The title of this sentimental Mexican comedy-drama translates as When Children Leave Home. The story revolves around the trials and tribulations of family patriarch Fernando Soler and his loyal wife Sara Garcia. Central to the drama is "black sheep" son Emilio Tuero, who can't seem to stay out of trouble -- not that he tries too hard. While the story has its tragic elements, comedy relief is provided by family friend Joaquin Pardove. Primitive by Hollywood standards, Cuando los Hijos se Van nonetheless pleased its target audience. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Maybe this is the moment for yet another remake of CUANDO LOS HIJOS SE VAN? For all I know there already has been, since this Mexican "soaper-cum-social-tract" offers just about everything mainstream moviegoers love. I've now seen the 1941 version via Blockbuster, and the 1969 rendering (via Greencine or netflix); both are sweet walks down memory lane. Not having read the original novel, I'm not sure which is more "correct" but both achieve their goals well. The story--children growing up & apart from their parents, taking roads right & wrong, while the parents learn to bend a little--is universal and ever-timely. It's a joy to see such lovely performances from some of Mexico's older cinema generation. 28 years passed between the first and second versions, and just about that much time's gone by once again. (There was a 1983 Mexican TV series produced by the famous actress Silvia Pinal). Surely there's some smart Mexican moviemaker who could update this classic for today? Go for it!
