Joe captures, in vivid detail, the frustrations of the "Silent Majority" at the peak of the Vietnam era. Boyle, while much younger than the epnoyomous character he portrays, makes a credible middle aged working class American who sees hippies as a threat to his values. The parallels to the present time are remarkable. Entertaining and instructive, "Joe" is a great film.

Unfortunately, this movie is SO DATED....with horrible stereotypes of hippies - - absolutely embarrasing and just stupid. Some old dude knocks off his daughter's stoned drug-dealer boyfriend...and he let's some scumbag bowling union-Joe mental midget know he killed him, and from that moment on, he allows him to subtuly blackmail him in order to keep his mouth shut ! The ONLY good thing about this movie is seeing a young, beautiful Susan Sarandon in the buff - - which is the only reason I gave this movie 3-stars. This movie is SO stupid and so absolutely unbelievable - - horrible music, and the horrible hippie actors are just PATHETIC ! Peter Boyle must have been totally high to accept this role. And the ending....hunting and killing hippies in the snow, and blowing away your lil' daughter is a bit much....

Archie Bunker with a gun on a rampage. A distorted piece of Hollywood liberal proselytizing that thinks it's making a profound and deep statement about the condition of America in 1970. In this very polarizing movie, Hollywood tries to make you believe that the America of 1970 is merely two camps; drug-taking sex-crazed hedonistic hippies on one hand, and the gun-toting,beer swilling, Hippie and black-hating, blue collar America that wants to kill them. The movie ends with a predictable ending you can see coming a mile away, and rubs your nose in it on the side of the hippies. Save your time. This is not an entertaining or enjoyable movie, but has some value in film schools as a period message movie - even though the message is absurd.
