A cut above the usual cheesy paste-up "tribute", The James Dean Story is imbued with a modicum of style thanks to fledgling film-director Robert Altman. Most of the film consists of clips from Dean's three starring pictures (East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause and Giant), with tantalizing glimpses of his pre-star career. One such glimpse, a snippet from the 1951 TV religious special Hill Number One, has popped up in virtually every Dean retrospective since. Altman's inherent cinematic gifts are evident in the impressionistic "re-enactment" of Dean's fatal auto crash.     A must-see for any fan of "East of Eden" or "Rebel Without a Cause." Shot in black & white, the print from which the DVD was made wasn't in the greatest shape, but in spite of the flaws caused by the aging process, the content of the film was outstanding.

    SNORE....It took me threestifferent sittings over a few days to plod through this slllooow, meaningless, psycho-analytical attempt documentary. Mostly because I kept on falling asleep. The pace of the docu is apalling. The information totally disconnected and irrelevant to Dean's memory. A montage of black still's without the flair of Ken Burns whose a master at this. I suppose for 1950's audiences, it was perhaps satisfactory .. but for current audiences a dud.
