Ariodante (1996)

Ariodante (1996)
Member Rating:
One of Georg Friedrich Handel's later operas (which also includes ballet sequences), Airodante is the story of a young woman whose father is the King of Scotland. Her life and reputation are tainted through no fault of her own when she's accused of sexual impropriety prior to her marriage. This video preserves a 1996 production of Handel's work by the English National Opera, which in turn was based on their enthusiastically received 1993 staging. The cast includes Ann Murray, Joan Rodgers, and Gwynne Howell. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I borrowed a copy of this gem from a friend. How does Handel keep you engrossed when his characters repeat the same line over and over? You may also ask yourself this question. Very edgy, sensual production that make you also wonder if the same guy wrote "Messiah". Actually, Handel wrote more opera than oratoreos. Getting chills as I write this, though I experienced it about 2 years ago. If you like a variety of types of opera, this one is a must see. Ann Murray shines in this male role, and counter-tenor Robson steals the show as the villain. TIP: get more info on these fabulous titles at Amazon, then rent or buy here.

I wish I could find something in this production to praise, but regrettably I was profoundly disappointed. I had to force myself to view it to the end. The staging is ridiculous and worked as a major distraction, thoroughly ruining the production for me.
