The Silent Witness (1917)
This drama is based on the play by Otto Hauerbach. Janet Rigsby (Helen May) has a romance with a college student. When she believes that he has died in a fire, she leaves town and gives birth to a son. She struggles to raise young Bob (Junius Mathews), but somehow manages to send him to college. Most of the other students are far better off financially, however, and one of these rich kids says some nasty things about his mother. Bob attacks the boy and thinks he has killed his him. He is put on trial for murder, not realizing that the district attorney, Richard Morgan, is really his father. Nor does Morgan realize it, but during the trial, additional information is revealed that exonerates Bob from the charge, and his mother and father are finally brought back together. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi
