Eyewitness to Jesus (2011)
Member Rating:
Biblical historians still debate whether the stories about Jesus were first written down by eyewitnesses or merely penned by later generations. This film features Biblical scholar Carsten Thiede's work indicating that the Gospel of Matthew was actually written down in 70 A.D., a time frame called the "eyewitness period" by some historians. Segments also focus on the new technologies and other devices being used to examine a host of ancient texts and other documents addressing Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. ~ Elizabeth Smith, Rovi

Focuses on fragments of papyrus whose provenance is highly questionable,. Compares style of writing to samples from three different periods ranging from mid 2nd century to mid 1st century and says the fragments have similarities to all three. So what? Which is it? Unconvincing on that basis alone. Otherwise, fairly interesting, given the filmmaker and principle interviewee are obviously beating the drum for their own enterprise. At least it does present the accepted conventional view as well. And it's a pleasant travelogue.

This was a scholarly work of research using 3 scraps from the gospel of Matthew, and correlating the style with the styes of writing from Jesus' time to 100 years later. It did not address the Gospel of Q which is likely the source of the three synoptic Gospels and was written in Codex form rather than in a scroll. This was a good background source for bible scholars.
