I Could Go on Singing (1963)
Member Rating:
This is a standard yet uneven drama featuring Judy Garland as Jenny Bowman, a powerful singer who obviously has a passion for the stage and performing. At the same time, she once had a passion for a certain British doctor, David Donne (Dirk Bogarde), that resulted in the birth of a baby boy. Unwilling to be a mom at this point in her career, Jenny gives the boy over to David, and he raises him as though he were an adopted son. David marries, and he and Jenny go their separate ways until many years have passed and, finding herself in London again, Jenny decides to visit her son. David is now a widower, and romantic sparks fly once he and Jenny get together -- raising the question of whether her passion for the stage is still stronger than her passion for David. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The chemistry between Judy Garland and Dirk Bogarde is palpable in this transitional film. In 1963, on the cusp of the sexual revolution, we have a middle aged singing star who gave up a child to the father in order to better persue her career, with some twists predictable and some not. Often overlooked is the tidy and genuine performance of Gregory Phillips as son Matt - a teenaged boy faced suddenly with the decisions of a man - caught in the middle of a struggle he formerly knew nothing about. Garland's power as a dramatic actress is undeniable and had she not worn so thin by her legacy of personal tragedies, it is easy to see her potential to rise as a stellar character actress in her later years. In this film she is only 40 - yet already old before her time. Nevertheless, this is still a fascinating piece and a great tribute to ensemble acting.

At this point in her career, smoking, overworked, and the terrible cycle pills to wake up and pills to sleep all were taking a terrible toll on Judy physically, and is very evident in this film (her TV shows are the same, but she is always the consumate performer!!). This is coupled with very poor screenwriting and structure that makes for a so-so film. But Judy, Dirk and all the supporting characters do their darndest to make this work. So you will enjoy it if you are a fan. But it is poorly constructed and edited. Too bad. But definitely worth a peek. I enjoyed it very much. The actor who plays her son does a wonderful job!
