This movie has a very simple, straight forward story line. Leslie's acting is what stands out and the rhythm of the movie is very good as well. It is somewhat like a comic book story, not something will happen in reality but gives you a chill for watching it.

I really don't understand all the great reviews that this movie gets. It's so utterly and completely pointless! Sure the actual gun battles are OK, and the cinematography and acting good, but what's with the story? The motivations of the characters are vague and non-sensical. The tactics used by both sides of the conflict are idiotic. Very empty.

The outline of this HK bullet ballet is fairly standard. It doesn't have the energy of the late 80s, early 90s bullet ballets, but Double Tap has a secret weapon: Leslie Cheung. Cheung plays Nick as being depressed and tired beyond endurance. Nick is killing one policeman per day until his girlfriend is released, but the subtext is that Nick is so dead inside that killing another human being is the only thing that makes him feel alive, even a little. Cheung's performance is so convincing, I felt worried for him. There is an excruciating action scene late in the film which is effective because we are fully invested in the fate of the characters. Maybe not a great movie, but worth a rental.
