The Hunt for Red October (1990)

The Hunt for Red October (1990)
Member Rating:
The first of several films based on Tom Clancy's "Jack Ryan" technothrillers, Hunt for Red October stars Alec Baldwin as eccentric CIA analyst Ryan and Sean Connery as Soviet submarine commander Marko Ramius. Ramius sets the plot in motion when he murders his political adviser, burns his orders, and steers his sub Red October towards American waters, hoping to defect. The CIA, aware that the Red October was about to embark on an evasive mission to demonstrate its ability to avoid detection and fire its nuclear missiles upon U.S. installations, believes that Ramius is insane, and that he plans to start World War III. To cover their own behinds, the Russians back up the CIA's suspicion. Only Jack Ryan believes that Ramius' mission is not as apocalyptic as it seems -- and it is Ryan who is assigned to infiltrate the Red October to prove his theory. The sort of film that in an earlier era would have been called a "thinking man's thriller," The Hunt for Red October ushered in a new series of Hollywood-produced post-Cold War adventure films, including 1995's Crimson Tide. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is the best political thriller that I have ever seen, and easily the best movie adaptation of a Tom Clancy novel. This is also the best submarine movie I've seen. The story is excellent, the plot is exciting, and the music is moving. An all-around great movie. Alec Baldwin does a surprisingly good job and Sean Connery is great, as usual.

My boyfriend really enjoyed the movie & was so excited when I TiVo'd it. I, however, wasn't that excited about it as it started, as it climaxed & as it ended. The music didn't go with it, the acting was very 70's....just wasn't my cup of tea. So....I compromised & gave this a 3 (he wanted a 4 & I wanted a 2, so we did the average). :)

Just the genre of 'Political Thriller' pretty much assures me a rating of at least 3 Stars. Sean Connery & Alec Baldwin deliver superbly in their appearance and performance of their respective roles. The flm provides for intrigue and tension as the two world super powers chess match each other for "official" interpretation and appearance to qualify the desired consequences against the rapidly diminishing element of time.
