Aria (1987)
Member Rating:
An international collection of well-known directors contributed to this compilation film, each fashioning a short film inspired by an aria from a famous opera. The approaches vary broadly, from the playful abstraction of Jean-Luc Godard's segment, which illustrates Armide with exercising body-builders, to the more literal approach of Franc Roddam, who transports Tristan und Isolde's story to modern-day Las Vegas. A particular stand-out is Julian Temple's take on Rigoletto, which recasts Verdi as the accompaniment to a contemporary Southern California sex farce. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

Each story is unique to interpretation of the music. One is boring beyond tears, the others are only ok. The best thing is the diversity of story line and the acting is decent. Some of the sets were a bit cheesy. If you are bored, this is still last on the list.

I'm trying to think of a lousier movie I've ever seen....... hmmmmm... nope, I can't. If you're forced to sit through this film and you love opera music, close your eyes. If you're forces to sit through it and you hate opera music, try to take a nap. Under no circumstances watch the film, unless you're in a deep depression and you actually want to feel worse.

This film, with all star directors and performers and lots of great opera, still left some gaping holes in the areas of comprehensibility and cohesion. Quite a few good ideas here but not a lot of clarity. Interesting but scattered look at a fascinating film genre.
