The Buccaneers (1995)
Member Rating:
Based on a novel by Edith Wharton, The Buccaneers follows four wealthy young women -- Nan (Carla Gugino), Virginia St. George (Alison Eliott), Conchita Closson (Mira Sorvino), and Lizzy Elmsworth (Rya Kihlstedt) -- throughout their eventful journey from America to London. Though they set off intending to hunt down potential husbands for themselves, what they find has less to do with love and more to do with the repressive nature of turn-of-the-century English society. Shunned as "new money" by London's elite and courted by a slew of noblemen lacking any code of personal honor, the quartet is forced to examine society's focus on social status and personal wealth. Directed by Philip Saville, this film also features Mark Tandy and Greg Wise. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

This movie is aimed at women who enjoy Masterpiece Theater (like my dorky self). :oD Lots of characters to either love or hate, plenty of ups and downs, and tons of emotion.

I only regret that I cannot watch it again for the first time. Finally, Edith Whartons unfinished masterpiece dazzles and compels us into the period, like only she can do. Brilliantly cast and painstakingly told this adaptation explores the characters more deeply than even Ms Wharton's manuscript. It is a film that will stay with you forever. I only hope that its length discourages modern filmmakers from re-doing it in some horribly unjust version starring Keira Knightly or worse. Complex and witty, the characters will touch your soul and remain part of you long after the film's 4 hours have elapsed.

I was totally unprepared for what I figured would be just a so-so movie. I loved every minute of it, and I'm a great-grandmother. This was totally entertaniing, even though I'm a realist. Some of it just seemed a little unrealistic. But, I was pleasantly surprised. I'm going to recommend this to my 30-ish grand-daughter. She is a true romantic, and will love it.
