I'd been waiting a long time to revisit this classic melodrama that spawned three more films (based on Gail Rock's books about a 1940s family). All feature Jason Robards, Mildred Natwick and Lisa Lucas in stellar performances, and while only this one is on dvd so far, there seems to be ample demand for the others: 'The Thanksgiving Treasure' (1973), 'The Easter Promise' (1975), and 'Addie and the King of Hearts' (1976). This production was before TV-movies started adding violins to beat us over the head with their maudlin moments, and it comes across far more honest. Maybe we'll get to see a release of Natwick in 'The Snoop Sisters,' 4 films where she paired with Helen Hayes.
