Member Rating:
A poor little rich girl gets some unexpected help from the wrong side of the tracks after her boyfriend breaks her heart in this comedy-drama. Ann-Sophie (Audrey Tautou) is a young woman from a wealthy family who is madly in love with her boyfriend Bernard (Serge Hazanavicius). Bernard, however, isn't quite so enchanted with her, and when she decides to visit him at work one day, he flies off the handle and tells her that they're finished. Despondent, Ann-Sophie wanders into a low-rent neighborhood looking for a good place to commit suicide when she meets Lea (Olivia Bonamy) and Aurelie (Axelle Ade-Pasdeloup), two sisters who support themselves as pickpockets. Ann-Sophie tells the sisters her tale of woe. Sympathetic, they take her into their humble home (though they do make her pay rent) and formulate a plan to get even with her newly-former boyfriend. Both Axelle Ade-Pasdeloup and Olivia Bonamy made their screen debuts in Voyous Voyelles. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This film is the answer to those who wonder if French film critics complain about the usual, and miseranble, state of the country's film fare as much as American critics do about their own. And, indeed, Paris can churn out as many as Hollywood!. If it wasn't Oscar nominated, then always read the synopsis. At least you'll have a vague idea of what's going on and can then sit back and enjoy what is supposed to pass for "real-life" in another country. As for film novelties: the accents, Olivia Bonamy's pouting pixie and Axelle Pasdeloup's vulnerable urchin were the highlights for mel

J'ADORE LE CINEMA O.

It iz very bon zat Tautou find ze bon screenplays after zis or ze career of she is don le rue. (in ze street) Zis iz Thelma et Louise go to France. Not exactly the height of Novelle vague cinema or even noteworthy. If you want to practice your French before taking a trip, this is fine. Otherwise, take a pass. Not terrible but not great either, and I am a big fan of Tautou from 'Amalie' and later films. Ron Howard liked her and put her in Da Vinci Code.

The film kept my interest and I think it was well enough done, but I can only say it was fair.
