Halls of Montezuma (1950)

Halls of Montezuma (1950)
Member Rating:
In Halls of Montezuma, Richard Widmark stars as Lt. Carl Anderson, a former schoolteacher who serves as a no-nonsense Marine officer during WW II. Anderson leads his patrol to a Japanese-controlled island, where the enemy has set up an experimental rocket base. The patrol's mission is to capture prisoners for interrogation, which proves a near-insurmountable task given the fact that the Americans are heavily outnumbered. Among the grime-covered Marines are Walter (Jack) Palance, Robert Wagner, Karl Malden, Richard Boone, Skip Homeier and Neville Brand. Jack Webb is a chain-smoking war correspondent, while Reginald Gardiner shows up as an aristocratic--but very tough--British officer. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Surprising pretty good movie, not too cheesy (can't compare to the new CG stuff). Overall story line is good, message very clear. War is not to be glorified, but the bloods in war are to be avoided at all! Deliberation must come 1st (man my political philosophy professor will be so proud!)

"The Halls" is just another in a long line of great old typical 40's (and 50's) portrayals of WWII. It has a lot of great war footage and does a good job of showing the downward spiral of Richard Widmark's character from the horrors of war and the loss of good young men. The flashback is used often to show the before and after of his life and what kind of man he is. The one drawback for me is Jack Palance and his MELODRAMA. He has this technique in this and other movies of opening his mouth as wide as it will go when a fellow buddy dies in combat...like he's so bereaved that he's going wako!! See for yourself!!! Otherwise, great flic.
