Milos Forman's adaptation of the tribal rock musical Hair stars John Savage as Claude, a quiet young man from the Midwest who becomes friendly with a group of New York hippies on his way to begin basic training in the military. The repressed Claude is quite taken with Berger (Treat Williams) and the group of freedom seekers who reside in Central Park. The group encourages Claude to go after a debutante named Sheila (Beverly D'Angelo). Legendary choreographer Twyla Tharp masterminded the dances, which attempt to flow from the natural settings of the film. The film includes most of the more famous songs from the original play, including "Donna," "Aquarius," "Easy to Be Hard," "Let the Sunshine In," "Good Morning Starshine," and the title number. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

I saw this movie when I was young and impressionable, it impressed me.It does hit on the issues of war and the different perspectives of race. I loved it and I recommend it to anyone that I know. Watch it. Keep an open mind though. In today's age, people are so closed minded, they might miss the message of the move. It is worth watching!

This version is so different from the play. It is watered down and made PC. The songs run by quickly and in an order which doesn’t make sense or give justice to the original musical. The characters have fun antics, but are superficial. The change of Claude for Berger in the end undermines most of the issue of Claude making his decision. It is just one example of being overly melodramatic. Lafayette's young mother doesn't need a "friend" she needs a co-parent. There are parallels between this and "Across the Universe". The latter does a better job of artistically showing the horror of the war (whereas this movie makes more of a statement about homosexuality and military indoctrination). The original was one of the most powerful anti-war statements during the Vietnam War. I am so disappointed that this is the version of the musical which will persist, as there are no recordings of the original. I hope that you would be able to see a stage production more like the original.

I watched this movie probably 20 years ago as a teenager and I remember it leaving an impression. I never saw the play but I had loved the songs and still will sing the Age of Aquarius to this day! I recently rented it again and though this movie is now dated as it has to do with the Veitnam war, it still sends a powerful message and really makes you stop and think about the sacrifices our men and women in the military have made. It has many adult based themes and not for young children because they really won't understand it. It is is still a very powerful movie and definitely a must see for the first time or again.
