The Gumball Rally (1976)

The Gumball Rally (1976)
Member Rating:
For better or worse, The Gumball Rally was the catalyst for a short-lived cycle of "illegal cross-country race" flicks. As thick-headed cop Roscoe (Norman Burton) does his best to stop the titular rally, a vast and varied contingent of contestants prepare to burn rubber from New York to California. The best-looking of the racers is played by top-billed Michael Sarrazin; Franco, a delightfully narcissistic Italian road jockey played by Raul Julia, also competes. Producer/director Chuck Bail was formerly a stunt coordinator, which helps to explain the incessant car crashes and near-misses in the film. Surprisingly, the doggedly low-budget Gumball Rally was produced by First Artists, a company formed by such major stars as Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, and Steve McQueen for the purpose of creating "prestige" film fare. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

"55 MPH is UNSAFE...it's BORING!" "And now my friends....the 1st rule of Italian driving.....What's-a-behind me is NOT important!" How can you NOT love this movie?! It's the movie that we have to thank for The Cannonball Run and the Gumball 3000 Rally. Raul Julia is hilarious as a sex-crazed Italian racecar driver. All the old cars from the Cobra, to the Ferrari Daytona V12 will make any car-nut drool. The premise is known, now....a race from NYC to California. It showcases a "friendly" feud between two successful friends and how far some people will go just to win! If you liked the Cannonball movies, you'll LOVE this one! If you're a car-nut, RENT IT! If you don't like it, shoot me! But if you don't like it, you have no taste!

I find this movie much funnier than Cannon Ball Run (which I still enjoy btw). It's not stupid or corny, it's just a fun movie about these guys making a cross country run while out witting a overly persistent detective (and their own skeletons). I'll always laugh at: "What's a behind me is not a important!"
