Member Rating:
Based on Vicki Baum's novel and produced by Irving Thalberg, this film is about the lavish Grand Hotel in Berlin, a place where "nothing ever happens." That statement proves to be false, however, as the story follows an intertwining cast of characters over the course of one tumultuous day. Greta Garbo is Grusinskaya, a ballerina whose jewels are coveted by Baron von Geigern (John Barrymore), a thief who fancies Flaemmchen (Joan Crawford), a stenographer and the mistress of Preysing (Wallace Beery), businessman boss of Kringelein (Lionel Barrymore), a terminally ill bookkeeper who is under the care of alcoholic physician Dr. Otternschlag (Lewis Stone). Grand Hotel won Best Picture at the 1932 Academy Awards. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

This is one of my favorites. Beery is fabulous, both Barrymores are great, Crawford gives a wonderful performance. Garbo gives her signature "I vant to be alone" line. After seeing this film twice or so, I read the book by Vicki Baum, which is terrific too - with more depth, of course (I recommend the book highly too). This is the first of the big Hollywood multi-star blockbusters, and it really creates a rich ambience of the big classy European hotel just buzzing with fascinating private lives all a-tumble.

In my quest to watch all Oscar winners, I liked this movie for the importance to put a famous cast in a single movie (comparing with Oceans Eleven). The performances were good mostly for Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford (by the way she was better than Garbo in my oppinion and that is why I think Garbo was so jealous). It shows in my oppinion that B/W movies are really good and are worth to watch.

I saw this film 30 years ago and wanted my teenage daughters to see it. We all loved it so much. The Barrymores and Joan Crawford steal the scenes except when Great Garbo is present. So fun!
