I loved this movie! I A wonderful truly poignant and humorous account of intertwined family relationships and how each one affects the other whether we like it or not. This movie makes you realize how silly it is that we try to control other people and their emotional reactions to situations. They did a wonderful job of portraying the relationship of the parents seeing each other after 20 years and picking right up as though no time had passed. This French filmmaker has an uncanny ability to make you feel like you are part of this sweet family.

Great movie - I've rented it twice. Socialogically it does make one think about how affairs and divorce affect lives children, young & middle aged adults, and, finally seniors. Culturally it gave me pause to consider how this fits in to French culture - it is certainly stereotypical French. It does all this in a humorous and maybe slightly quirky manner. It is classic French cinema with accomplished (if not too common) French actors - all very very good. If you're in the mood for a melancholy Christmas movie - this is for you. My only knocks: - the technical dubbing of the Sabine's voice for Russian songs was sub-par for 1999 - it's distracting when you keep noticing she's not actually singing in synchronization with the visuals. - I thought the "American/English" scoring of Christmas songs was out of place - but perhaps these replaced traditional French Noel songs in the sub-titled version that I was watching.

French romantic comedy at its best. Great story with great performances. The title is intriguing as it can mean a piece of wood, a dumb person or a failure. I did not see a piece of wood but the other descriptions may apply!
