Without the exploding mutants and robotic high school babes that most Americans associate with Japanese anime, this film is a taut psychological thriller. At the behest of her agent, Mima leaves both her moderately successful girl-pop band and her virginal image for an acting gig in a sexy television drama. Her new career and new look does not please all of her fans, though. She soon finds herself being stalked by a shadowy figure with long hair and bad teeth, and she discovers that someone has posted disquietingly intimate details about her private life on the web. Later, the architects of her new image, a photographer and screenwriter, are found stabbed to death. But what unnerves Mima most is that she feels increasingly threatened by an evil incarnation of her former pop icon self. Is she being pursued by an irate Mima impersonator or has she slid into some kind of delusional psychosis? Perfect Blue is directed by noted anime screenwriter Satoshi Kon. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Mima Kirigoe leaves her girl pop group to pursue a career as an actress. With the move, she loses much of her innocence; first she does a rape scene, then a nude photo shoot. It leads her into schizophrenia. She sees another Mima who hates what the real Mima has become and wants to take her place in the world. There is a website written by someone who claims to be Mima and knows way too much about her. Mima's soap opera starts to mirror her life. Days start to blur together. People around Mima start to die. Mima doesn't know if she has killed them. And to complicate matters, there is an obsessed stalker. This is one of the most ingenious psychological puzzles ever built. At the end, you will know what is but not what has been. The puzzle will stay with you. I did a college psychology paper on this film and discovered a new dimension while writing it.

This anime is a mind bender. I really enjoyed the whole thing (minus the rape scene). You are led one direction in the film, then at the end, wham, you are blown away. I think the story is the real gem here. The art seems a bit dated (as well as using a mac computer with OS 8.0 on it. The DVD was released in 2000, but it seems a bit older. Music was so-so, but the real bonus here was a great story. It felt like Akira. Warning, there is a graphic scene in it that is not cool for young kids, but it moves the story. A very good film, this is.

This is an anime movie that would apeal to more of a person just getting into anime. The plot is that of a psycological thriller rather then a horror movie. It takes a few minuets for the movie to get into the issues but once it does it keeps you guessing till the very end. I definatly recommend this movie for ADULTS interested in getting involved in anime. The movie is definatly very adult oriented for children and some teenagers. Sexual issues arises throughout the movie but not unbearable, haunting situations. I definalty recommend this movie to the adult audience who appeals to a great thriller.
