Persuasion (1971)

Persuasion (1971)
Member Rating:
Adapted from Jane Austen's final novel, the five-part British drama series Persuasion starred Anne Firbank as Anne Elliot, a young woman dangerously close to becoming an "old maid." Seven years earlier, Anne had allowed her opinions to be swayed by others (local busybody Lady Russell [Marian Spencer] in particular) and had spurned the advances of dashing Captain Wentworth (Bryan Marshall). Regretting her rashness, Anne could only stand aside in quiet desperation as the now-affluent and well-connected Wentworth ardently pursued the much-younger Louise Musgrove (Zhivila Roche). But though Anne might have been too proud to admit that she still harbored affection for Wentworth, her pride could easily be cast aside should she perceive an opportunity to win the Captain back. This TV version of Persuasion made its British TV bow on April 18, 1971. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I have read the book and the story is Wonderful but this is the worst Jane Austen movie I have ever seen. It is a bad in every way, I can only compare it to a high school play from the 70's. The Persuasion film with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds is much much better.

They cast a woman who looks like she's in her 40's to play Anne, and her wooden acting style and the dreadful, inauthentic costumes (really wrong fabrics), makeup (whiteish lipstick, way overdone mascara), hairstyles (soooo 70's) and interior decoration (especially the choice of avocado and indian red wall colors), did nothing to make us really want to watch this production. There was absolutely no spark between the lead characters (most of whom were hamming it up something awful) and the entire script missed all the good original Jane Austin humour. Give this production a skip and stay with the Roger Michell version from BBC Films (with Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root).

This movie was okay or even less than that. Just about the worst Jane Austin film and story I know of but that still puts it above many romantic commedies I guess. Very hard to understand towards the beginning. It's just like she put together ideas from all her other stories into one. Oh, and not very great character development.
