In the 15th century, France is mired in the 100 Years War when a humble voice appears, claiming to have been instructed by the Lord to lead the French army into battle and defend their land against the British. The voice belongs to Jeanne d'Aragon, a teenage girl from a tiny village, and, to the surprise of many, her story does not fall on deaf ears. Wearing the armor of a soldier, the girl known as Joan of Arc leads the French troops in what she believes is a holy battle. Joan would soon be tried for heresy for her actions, but history would vindicate her with sainthood. The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc stars Milla Jovovich as Joan of Arc, Faye Dunaway as Yolande d'Aragon, and Dustin Hoffman as The Grand Inquisitor. Directed by Luc Besson, The Messenger was originally titled Joan of Arc but added the prefix to avoid confusion with the 1999 TV movie of the same name, which starred Leelee Sobieski. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

"Joan of Arc" 1999 version, which was more realistic and fact-based. "The Messenger" is Joan-of-arc with a mystical spin. Ok as far as storytelling but won't give you a sense of the on-going history behind the story.

Wow...what a powerful movie! Even though I would have preferred the characters speak in their naive languages and read sub-titles, the story was great. I've heard about this incredible person off and on when I was in school, but to watch the movie then read about her lead to a greater understanding. It's Hollywood's version, but it's better than nothing.

I would have loved this movie if there hadn't been so many theatric abstractions incorporated and intercut with the straight story - a legend that is epic and uplifting and tragic enough as it is. Milla is wonderful, as is a great supporting case, and she would have been even better had the film been played historically or legendarily straight, more along the directorial lines of "Braveheart" that it looks quite a bit like. Showing her as possibly deranged or delusional or psychotic at times undermines what she actually did and why so many followed, though she may have had some of those obsessive characteristics. Dustin Hoffman as Joan's conscience? That totally does NOT work. This should have been better - and yet is still pretty good. Wonderful use of Blu-Ray 5.1 sound, one of the best in that technical regard.
