The first feature film of Helene Angel, who has won several prizes for her short films, Peau d'Homme, Coeur de Bete uses the point of view of children to focus on a tragedy that befalls a family. After fifteen years of absence, a man returns to his family. Five-year-old Aurelie watches the stranger arrive and develops an immediate affinity with him. Her older sister, however, is very suspicious of the intruder and certain that misfortune will follow. The adults see nothing, but struggle with all their might when tragedy strikes. Difficult to describe just how awful this film made us feel. The cruelty and violence are unrelenting and gut-wrenching. The entire family (and indeed their community) was mentally unsound. Most disturbing when a young child is staggering around under the emotional blows of the terrible, unprotecting, unloving adults. A real "don't watch," in my opinion.

Powerful film about a deeply dysfunctional and violent family, and the toll it ultimately takes on the two children. Great performances. The film is both disturbingly real, and slightly surreal, as much is perceived thorough the eye of the children. This deeply divided critics, some of whom saw it as purely sadistic, but without point. But I agree with those that saw it as both a metaphor and examination of the damage to all involved done by the masculine id.
