Member Rating:
Hank Greenberg was the first great Jewish star in baseball; at a time when the game was still racially segregated, Greenberg became a first-class hitter for the Detroit Tigers (a host city not always known for its tolerance, as the career of Father Charles Coughlin will prove), nearly beating Babe Ruth's home run record and becoming one of the game's best loved figures (he was also a friend and confidant to Jackie Robinson as he was breaking baseball's color barrier). Hank Greenberg became a powerful role model in America's Jewish community, and this documentary follows his life and career up to his death in 1986. Director Aviva Kempner includes extensive interview footage of Greenberg filmed in the year before his passing, as well as newsreel footage of Greenberg in action, reminiscences from his teammates and testimonials from his family, friends and fans, including Alan Dershowitz and Walter Matthau. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I'm a baseball fan, won't deny that, so if you are a fan of the game then check this flick out. Two things about this movie that makes it special; 1. Even guys like Greenberg who's family came to America from another country experienced racism. 2. Greenberg did his part once getting into management to eliminate racism in baseball. I learned that Greenberg was a player with little talent but developed work ethics and out worked other players. I also learned that Greenberg was a strong patriot who volunteered for the military right smack in the middle of his baseball career, spending some 4 years defending this country of ours. Greenberg was the man back in the day and you will find his story very compelling......

I was very impressed with this movie. If you are a baseball fan you will love its fascinating look at a true baseball hero. And its extensive footage of scenes looking back at the 1930's and 1940's really put you back into that time period. It's great to see how Hank was looked up to as a role model for the Jewish community. He meant so much to them. In the end he comes across as a nice guy and a true patriot. I have to say that with all of the big money in sports these days it is refreshing to see a likable superstar in a more innocent time. The world has changed and they don't make them like Hank any more.
