The epic eighth-century poem of Saxon lore gets moved into the Scandinavian future in this science fiction adaptation of Beowulf. Here, Beowulf (Christopher Lambert) rescues a damsel in distress, Pendra (Patricia Velasquez), who is being menaced by two men with large swords and bad tempers. Beowulf hears tell of Grendel, a force of evil that feasts on the flesh of warriors of Hrothgar (Oliver Cotton), who are holding their ground in the Outpost. Before long, Beowulf finds himself doing battle with Hrothgar's daughter Kyra (Rhona Mitra), Hrothgar's master of arms, Roland (Goetz Otto) and even Grendel's mother (Layla Roberts). Patricia Velasquez appeared in Beowulf shortly before she filmed her showy turn in The Mummy, while Layla Roberts's resume includes an October 1997 appearance as Playboy's Playmate of the Month.     This was an inexcusably bad massacre of a classic tale. Everything was bad... the casting and the acting (randomly inappropriate), the music (absolutely laughable!), the set (we didn't get the contraptions), the costumes (looked like they raided the costume closet of the local community theater)and the story (which, aside from the name of the "Hero" was not a recognizable adaptation). We rented this movie to watch with our 13 year old son who just finished a month-long study of Beowulf. He was confused and bored, and asked if he could go to bed early (on a Friday night!) We suffered through to the end, only because we were hoping to find some shred of the original story; we never did. What a shameless exploitation of legendary literature!

    All you need to know about this film is that it's set over a thousand years ago, yet they have nylon and zippers. Ummm... Christopher Lambert has one facial expression and one tone of voice. Inexplicably, although it's set in medieval Scandinavia, two of the major characters are black (Thankfully, they don't kill off the black guys first). Okay, maybe it's actually set in the future. Why, then, are all the characters wearing armor and brandishing swords? Why is there no electricity? I would have accepted a post-modern retelling of Beowulf, but this is way too full of anachronisms. The effects are anything but special, and the dialogue is past laughable. At one point one of the major characters screams out, "This is bull----!" Up until that point I wasn't aware that Sam Jackson was in the movie. The only things worth watching are Rhona Mitra's (who plays a character that's not even in the Beowulf epic) and Layla Roberts' bosoms. I want my 89 minutes back.

    Beowulf is a cult classic. The special effects are phenomenal and much of the acting excellent. This is a futuristic version of the Middle English tale. Sexy, fun, and pulse pounding action.
