    James G.

A Certain Justice is very characteristic of P. D. James's later novels - it is violent, sometimes rather graphic and almost none of the characters are people you'd like to meet in real life. The mystery is elegantly constructed and takes many twists and turns, into the past of the victims, ultimately culminating in a tense stand-off between a murderer and Inspector Dalgliesh. This is not the best of James's works, but it is solid work and well worth watching.

I suspect reading the book would have been helpful in liking this film more. I found the victim and the possible suspects quite unlikeable and so did not much care if the crazy young man killed the very naive and less than brilliant young woman. Nor did I care who killed the abrasive attorney. It was a typically well rendered BBC mystery and I like Roy Marsden as Dalgliesh but this is not the best in the series.
