Director Federico Fellini gently lampoons the world of small-time show business in Ginger and Fred. Giulietta Masina and Marcello Mastroianni star as Amelia Bonetti and Pippo Botticella, a onetime celebrity song-and-dance team. Having risen to fame with a dancing act where they recreated the acts of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire (hoping to become the Fred and Ginger of Italy), Amelia and Pippo parted company to pursue their separate lives. Neither one was particularly successful in other fields of endeavor, so when after many years Amelia is offered a guest-star gig on a TV variety show, she jumps at the chance. She also seeks out her former partner, Pippo, who may have looked like Astaire in his younger days, but now....The overall good cheer of the film was dampened when the real Ginger Rogers sued the distributors of Ginger and Fred for "defamation of character." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Finally another redeemable film by Fellini although still pale in light of La Strada and other venues. It at least has a consistent plot about a former dance team that imitated the style of Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers 40 years prior to the time frame of the story. They reunite w/in the context of a bizare television show, Fellini's focus of critique this round. Giuletta Masino still shows her magic even at mid almost late age, one still sees her sparkle. Interesting to note Felinni's recurrent obsession with the circus as is most often plugged into every one of his films I've seen thus far. But at least the plot remains intact if not a bit droll, instead of spinning into nothingness as some of his other renowned works.

Definitely not Fellini's best work, but still a must for fans. Giulietta Masina and Marcello Matroianni are brilliant as always.
