Member Rating:
East is East, a fast-moving comedy drama of mixed-race manners, is set in Salford, England in 1970. It centers on the Anglo-Pakistani alliance of the Khan family that is both claustrophobically cohesive and hopelessly dysfunctional. In their over-crowded terrace house, anarchy erupts daily with farcical energy. The Khan children, caught between the traditional dogmatism of their Pakistani father (Om Puri) and laissez-faire attitude of their British mother (Linda Bassett), have a lot of difficulties to follow their dreams of becoming citizens of the modern world. Based on the award-winning stage play by Ayub Khan-Din, East is East had great success in the theatres of London before it was made into a film. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, Rovi

I liked the movie because it shows the struggle of a traditional half-Pakistani family living in England. Throughout the movie, the family deals with the many conflicts which arise between traditional Pakistani life and modern culture in England. If you are looking for a soothing, fuzzy, feel-good comedy, you should look elsewhere, as this movie deals with some difficult topics. But in the end everything works out for the best.

I liked this movie--in fact I saw it at the theatre and decided to rent the movie again. I enjoyed it the second time as well-- Now if you are very sensitive about your faith be it Christian or Muslim perhaps this film may not strike you as funny--However if you want to see a humorous take on what it might be like to grow up being both Pakistani and English and the struggles that arise--then rent East is East you will be glad you did--

A slice of bi-cultural life. This movie showed the frustration of a domineering Pakistani man trying to raise his English/Pakistani kids in London. It also dealt with the frustrations of his English wife. I thought it was interesting...sometimes funny and sometimes sad. It gave me a look at a culture very different from my own.
