Incredible that they released this DVD with a damaged soundtrack - sounds like the original tape suffered magnetic damage. It's especially noticeable in the orchestral parts. But the singing is good. Also, being an ENO production, we have the disadvantage of hearing the opera in English instead of the origianl language, sometimes creating rhythmic awkwardness. The ENO orchestra is a little sub-par; occasional problems with intonation and ragged entrances/releases. The sets and costumes are typical English National Opera: a little cheap. However, the opera is a fine work by a great composer.

I was very disappointed with this DVD. I am not familiar with opera and even though it was sung in English. I really had trouble understanding the lyrics. I simply don't understand why they would release this DVD without subtitles.

This opera has only one good aria, and it is over fast. Fortunately the ENO is an innovative house that showcases new (and cheap) talent in thoughtful productions. The story of the water nymph is still there and much the better for the new perspective. I wanted to broaden my outlook and I love the "Hymn to the Sun" aria; after that, it is just a Mitteleurope drudge musically. That's why these innovative productions are so valuable- they give a reason to watch. The cinematography is effective; therefore my high rating.
