Spot on. This movie nailed it in every aspect. Compelling but believable, esoteric but accessible, devastating but cathartic. Good production quality for the budget. Great, minimalist acting. Good stuff. Watch it.

If you love British movies as I do you will love this one. I almost felt like I was back in Tess's time. The country estates and farms were beautiful. The director was able to catch the pastoral way of life perfectly. It is a sad story but most of us who have read the book knew how it was going to end.

I am a big fan of Justine Waddell in Wives and Daughters, so I thought I'd check this movie out. I really wanted to like it, but I didn't. If you like a melancholy plotline, watch this, but if you like something more uplifting, and interesting in that “Pride and Prejudice” way, watch Persuasion, or Wives and Daughters, or Middlemarch. Unlike Tess, you won't be disappointed by them. Also, for parents of teenage girls in love with the Jane Austen genre, skip this one -- there is one scene that would be too disturbing.
