The Source (1999)
Member Rating:
Director Chuck Workman, who documented the life of pop culture icon Andy Warhol in his 1990 film Superstar, here explores the lives, works and influence of four leading lights of the "Beat Generation" of the 1950s: William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady. Cutting back and forth between archive footage of his subjects, readings of selections from the three authors by Johnny Depp, Dennis Hopper and John Turturro (Cassady was an associate and inspiration to the Beats), and film clips that in both serious and farcical fashion document the impact the Beat culture had on American society, Workman creates a fast-paced collage of sounds and images that attempts to show how the Beats became the dominant counter-cultural movement of the last half of America's 20th Century. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Great view for beat fans out there, won't tell you much you don't already know about the beat generation but interesting the way it lays it out from it's beginnings through its evolution to the hippies to its effects on the modern era. It features interviews with all sorts of beat notables, along with readings by Johnny Depp, Dennis Hopper, and an excellent reading of Howl by John Turturro.

"The Source" was a great inspiration to me in the way that it caught the period of the Beat poets! The vast coverage of the period and figures, the music and associations with other mediums (ie: musicians and writers) really gave me a solid knowledge of what it was all about back then! The only thing I would have changed is to mention soem of the lesser known poets such as Diane Di Prima. But I loved the film clips esp. of Gregory Courso! Priceless!

Movie was okay. It was a docmentary of the 3 poets. Johnny was Jack K. He was good as always. I feel the movie was good for the history of beatniks. I just was not that impressed with it.
