Director Sidney Lumet has remade the 1980 movie by his contemporary, John Cassavetes, casting Sharon Stone in the role of Gloria (portrayed in the original by Cassavetes' wife, Gena Rowlands), a street-toughened woman sliding into middle age. When the neighbors are murdered by a group of mobsters, one of which is a former boyfriend, Gloria takes the couple's seven-year-old son (Jean-Luke Figueroa) on the run. In time, she learns why the boy's parents were killed, and maybe just a little about herself. Sidney Lumet, director of '70s classics Network and Dog Day Afternoon, focuses more on the relationship between Gloria and the boy than did the original. Coincidentally, this would make the film very similar to the Brazilian Central Station, released at virtually the same time. ~ Ron Wells, Rovi

This remake shows that Miss Stone displayed her talent more than Gena Rowlands in the original. This was a much better version of the story, or perhaps that Lumet is that much better a director than Cassavetes. Anyway, the story flowed well, less jerky in production and was quite entertaining. There was more explanation of what was going on with the characters, which, in the original, left one with the nagging question of "huh?"; or, confused? write your own script.

Gloria is pretty fast paced from the start as you see Sharon Stone (Gloria) released from prison in Florida after a three year stay. After some bus, plane, and cab action she goes right back to NY to confront her mobster ex BF (who she took the wrap for) and get some closure so she can move on with her life. During her visit she discovers an adorable little boy "Nicky" whose family had just been executed by said mobster and his croonies. This all happens in the first 20 minutes and frm then on you witness the dynamics of love and motherhood blossom as Gloria and Nicky both discover they're all they have. It can be a little rough watching adult and child go back and forth so aggressively at times, but its all forgotten when Gloria's protective and emotional gene kick in. Don't expect a roller coaster Oscar winner here, simply a human story about love in a different yet understood way.
