Gates of Heaven (1978)
Member Rating:
Documentary filmmaker Errol Morris' debut immediately attracted acclaim for its straight-faced treatment of a subject practically begging for ridicule. When the Foothill Memorial Gardens pet cemetery, located north of San Francisco, closed (its land was sold for a housing project), the 450 animals interred there had to be moved to Bubbling Well Memorial Park in nearby Napa. Morris saw the transfer as an opportunity to explore the world of pet owners who are so devoted that they see nothing wrong with giving their animals a full dose of the last rites. His simple technique was to film his subjects, usually seated, talking about their loved ones, alternating with shots of the two cemeteries and the move. Critic Roger Ebert became an early champion of the film, and Morris' struggles to finish it resulted in a very amusing short film, Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe. The German filmmaker had bet Morris that he would never complete the film, and when he did, Herzog publicly boiled and consumed one of his shoes for the camera of director Les Blank. ~ Tom Wiener, Rovi

Great Documentary. This is reality at it's best and the personalities of everyone come to life in an interesting documentary about a Pet Cemetery. It's amazing how the real lives of these people perfectly fit the stereotypes of who they are and what they do. The director, Errol Morris lets the people speak for themselves and does an excellent job of making a documentary instead of a statement. Great work by Errol Morris sadly most of his other Documentaries are Democrat Party propaganda pieces. Since this was filmed in the late 70's in California it's a great time piece of an era and location. I'm sure everything filmed there is a strip mall now.

I've written dozens of these here and Netflix and never have I watched such an inane piece of junk. If that's video journalism I want to be in line for the grants. Point blank interviewing of nearly anyone about nearly anything would flow more smoothly and contain more pertinent content. By the DVD's midpoint I wanted to buy a plot for the owners of the pet cemetary right next to the producer/directors. If anything significant was presented in the last part of this video it would be a greater comeback than the Red Sox World Series. When you see this video, run away FAST.

One idea in "Catch 22" is that if you are totally bored, it seems like life lasts forever. This movie will make it seem like you have spent 3 weeks watching it.
